Penn State Jargon

Like many complex organizations, universities use "jargon" and/or acronyms to describe various programs and services. We asked our students to brainstorm a list of terms that, because they are Penn State "jargon", may be confusing to those new to our community:

FTCAP: FTCAP stands for First-Year Testing, Consulting and Advising Program, offered by the Division of Undergraduate Studies. After submitting their deposit to Penn State, a student will be given testing and consulting dates. During the counseling phase, a student meets with an advisor and selects courses. For students who choose LEAP and are already registered for courses during the summer, courses for fall semester will be selected. Non-LEAP students will select both summer and fall courses. More information on FTCAP. Also, check here if you have not received FTCAP notification yet.

LEAP: Learning Edge Academic Program provides entering freshmen the chance to begin their journey at Penn State University Park by way of a learning community. LEAP students take two courses together in groups of 24 that are reserved exclusively for first-year students, live together in the same residence hall area, and have an upper class student mentor to guide them through their first semester.

RA: A student resident assistant
